In 2006 some of the world’s top violin makers and scientists gathered for one of the most groundbreaking and comprehensive studies of the violin form ever conceived. Using cutting-edge technology they analysed three classic violins – the 'Titian' and 'Willemotte' Stradivaris and the 'Plowden' Guarneri 'del Gesù' – and in Strad3D, they present their discoveries.
Disc one includes scans, animations, dendrochronology, photos, interactive displays and sample wave files; disc two includes a documentary, CT scan projections and performances by Cho-Liang Lin.
Sam Zygmuntowicz, creative director of the project, explains: ‘It is our hope that the developing scientific research can be combined with traditional violin expertise to produce a more comprehensive understanding of the great violins, and of the hidden inner workings of the violin maker’s craft.’ Strad3D is essential viewing for anyone who is interested in the violin and its craft.
System requirements for disc one: Windows or Mac compatible computer with DVD drive; current web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox) and Flash viewer 10; Mac OS X 10.4 or later is needed for some features.
