It includes an introduction to the history of Cremonese violin making, centred on the achievements of Stradivari's working life, and individual descriptive articles by Charles Beare noting the significance and provenance of the 27 violins, 5 violas, 5 cellos and other instruments shown in the historic 1987 exhibition organised by the author. There is a foreword by Yo-Yo Ma and an article on the musical background of the period by Professor Elena Ferrari Barassi. The precise measurements of each instrument are tabulated.
