Mara Parker, cellist and assistant professor of musicology and string performance at Widener University, looks at the development of the string quartet in the second half of the 18th century, as it changed from first-violin showpiece to a more equal discourse between the instruments. But this may not have been a smooth transition, according to Parker. She isolates four different types of quartet: lecture, polite conversation, debate and conversation and, by way of example, shows how composers' choices depended on a whole range of factors. 'If you are a performer, professional or amateur, this book will be worth investigating...' (Tully Potter)
Hardback. 316pp; music examples.
