Bloch String Quartets nos.1–4, Griller Quartet
The first four of Ernest Bloch’s string quartets, played by the great British ensemble for whom nos. 2–4 were written, the Griller Quartet. The group’s interpretation of the massive first quartet is generally considered one of the greatest recordings of quartet music. ‘The performance [of the first quartet] is sublime. The second movement is breathtaking and their quiet contemplative approach in the penultimate “Pastoral” is exquisite.’ (John White, CRC reviews, Winter 2004) (Visit www.classicrecordcollector.com for the CRC Awards 2005 judges’ comments)
