This fascinating documentary provides a vivid insight into 20th-century violin making in Italy. Four of the most respected contemporary luthiers – Francesco Bissolotti, Gian Carlo Guicciardi, Gio Batta Morassi and Renato Scrollavezza – recount their experiences and chart the rebirth of the northern Italian lutherie tradition, supplemented by a range of historical sources. A wealth of visual material includes footage of the Bisiachs and Simone Sacconi at work, and the opening of the 1937 Exhibition in Cremona. The narration, by violin expert Philip Kass, provides additional background on the history of violin making, right back to its very beginnings.
