This book brings together eleven instruments by some of the greatest luthiers in Italy’s history. Six Stradivaris and violins by Guarneri ‘del Gesù’, Nicolò Amati, Carlo Bergonzi, G.B. Guadagnini and Giuseppe ‘filius Andreae’ Guarneri are featured, with clear, detailed photographs and a brief introductory text (in Italian and English) for each instrument. This is a fascinating collection of works that until now have rarely been seen in public.
Launched in 2009, the Friends of Stradivari network brings together collectors, researchers, makers and restorers, and anyone who loves instruments of the classical Cremonese violin making tradition. The present collection includes instruments from the collections of Sau-Wing Lam, Si-Hon Ma and Herbert and Evelyn Axelrod. Some of the highlights are Stradivari’s decorated ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Hellier’ violins, and one of only five guitars he is known to have made.
