Cellist János Starker, who died in April 2013 aged 88, was considered one of the 20th century’s greatest string players and teachers. For this biography, Joyce Geeting conducted numerous interviews with Starker himself, as well as close friends, colleagues and former pupils, for an insight into his development and influences as a musician.
The book covers Starker’s experiences during the Second World War, his amazement at seeing Jascha Heifetz in performance, the colleagues and conductors he respected – and some of the worst performances he ever heard. It is supplemented with several articles by Starker himself, taken from his long career as a performer and pedagogue.
