Cellist János Starker, who died in April 2013 aged 88, was considered one of the 20th century’s greatest string players and teachers. For this biography, Joyce Geeting conducted numerous interviews with Starker himself, as well as close friends, colleagues and former pupils, for an insight into his development and influences as a musician.

The book covers Starker’s experiences during the Second World War, his amazement at seeing Jascha Heifetz in performance, the colleagues and conductors he respected – and some of the worst performances he ever heard. It is supplemented with several articles by Starker himself, taken from his long career as a performer and pedagogue.

Watch an interview with author Joyce Geeting in which she discusses the man, his music, his teaching, and his relationships.

Buy this product with 'Cello Heroes' in which János Starker discusses the performers who have made an impact on his own playing, and the 'Cello Heroes Calendar 2011', which includes full-length photos of Starker's c.1730 Carlo Tononi instrument.
